Rute, a route in Andalusia

Rute is a mediterranean village at the South of Spain in the province of Cordoba. It is located at 90 km. from Cordoba city, Jaen and Malaga, i. e. at 45 minutes by car to the beach.  Its main source of economy is the agriculture, the farming of olive trees.  It could be called as a mountain village with the feature of having one of the biggest reservoirs in the region.  The weather is tipically Mediterranean although hotter in summer and colder in winter, with rainy springs and short autumns.

Amongst Cultures

Rute has historicals remainings since the Neolitic period, La Cueva Negra.  There are the rests of a castle from the Muslim period in a village of Roman origins, Cisimbrum, Zambra; El Canuto, a watch tower from the Muslim period and Rute Viejo an old city from mid XIII century.  Apart from all the churches, the Town Hall an old houses since 16th century.

The history of Rute has been outstanding because of its position in the boundaries of two different kingdoms in the Middle Ages, the Kingdom of Granada and the Kingdom of Cordoba.  Therefore, it has changed of governors very frecuently in short time periods.

Welcome to the Municipality of Anis

This village is also characteristic for the making of anis since the beginning of the 17th century, counting with the amount of over 40 stills in the 20s.  Although it is also well known in Spain for its mantecados, Christmas cakes, and its parma ham.

Spectacular views

Because of its boundary position, the inhabitants of Rute are used to receive visitors and people from different cultures.   In the heart of the Subbetica Natural Park, tourist are also delighted by the wonderful panoramic views of Rute, having heights oscilating from 400m to 1200m upon the sea level and sorrounded by olive trees and the great reservoir El Pantano de Iznajar.

Adebo

The Association for the Defense of Donkeys is a non-profit organization with a unique Reserve of Donkeys at the outskirts of the Sierra de Rute.  Since 1988, one of its main goals is to protect the Andalusian-Cordoban race of donkeys which is in danger of extinction.

Communications

International communications are easy being 50 minutes from Malaga Airport, one hour from Granada and Cordoba and less than two hours from Seville.  The resorts of the Costa del Sol, Costa Tropical and Costa Almeria are easily accesible by car.
